WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump on Tuesday posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, to conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk. The ceremony at the White House coincided with what would have been Kirk's 32nd birthday, a little over a month after he was fatally shot during a speaking engagement in Utah.
In his remarks, President Trump praised Kirk as a key figure in mobilizing young conservatives and pushing the nation's politics further to the right. The President highlighted Kirk's significant contributions to the conservative movement, particularly his organizing work among young voters and his role in building a powerful media platform.
A First for the Second Term
The award makes Charlie Kirk the first recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in President Trump's second term. The President had previously announced his intention to present the medal to Kirk shortly after the activist's death in September, calling him a "giant of his generation" and an "inspiration to millions."
Vice President J.D. Vance and Kirk's widow, Erika, were in attendance at the ceremony, with Erika Kirk accepting the medal on behalf of her late husband. The event, originally scheduled for the East Room, was moved to the Rose Garden to accommodate a large crowd of supporters and conservative political figures.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. It is awarded to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
